Beyond the Backdrop

Beautiful family photographs aren’t always found in the most obvious places or created by rushing through a session. They unfold when we become intentional about where we photograph, how we use the space around us, and when we give families the freedom and time to simply be. This self-paced online workshop is an invitation to slow down, look more thoughtfully, and create images that feel honest, poetic, and deeply connected to the families you photograph. Through 4 teaching modules and 2 behind-the-scenes videos, you’ll explore the art of choosing locations with intention and learning to let time shape the story. Rather than forcing moments or moving quickly from one setup to the next, we’ll look at how slowing down can create space for genuine connection, unexpected beauty, and photographs that feel like a true reflection of a family. You’ll learn to see beyond the location itself, to notice light, movement, and the little pockets of possibility within a space. Most importantly, you’ll learn how allowing a session to unfold naturally can transform ordinary moments into something beautiful and poetic. Inside the workshop, we’ll explore: - Choosing locations with intention and purpose. - Seeing the storytelling potential within a space. - Using time and movement to create natural, connected imagery. - Letting go of the pressure to constantly direct or force moments. - Creating space for families to interact, wander, play, and simply be. - Finding beauty in the in-between moments and allowing the story to unfold. - Editing videos to show you how I bring my images to life.
